Living Locally, Aging Well: Developing a Bottom-Up Living Locally Framework

As cities rapidly expand and populations continue to age, the question is no longer just how we design cities, but who we design them for. This talk explores “living locally” as a people-centred vision for creating healthier, more connected, and age-friendly neighbourhoods. Challenging purely top-down planning approaches, the research proposes a bottom-up framework grounded in everyday lived experiences and evolving community needs. By rethinking walkability, accessibility, social connection, and access to local services, the study highlights how urban design can foster independence, belonging, and wellbeing, enabling people not only to age in place, but to thrive within their local communities.

Bio

I am second-year PhD researcher in Urban Design focusing on “living locally” and age-friendly neighbourhoods. I have experience in publishing journal papers and articles in the field. My research adopts a participatory approach, engaging users throughout the design process to better understand their needs, preferences, and everyday experiences, with the aim of developing more inclusive and responsive urban environments.
