Mātauranga Māori and science: in defence of clarity

The relationship between mātauranga Māori and science has been discussed for decades. And while much of this discussion has been fruitful, recently it has taken a more combative turn. There has been a lot of focus on the question “Is mātauranga Māori science?”. But framing the debate around such questions of identity can end up overlooking what is actually at stake. These debates tend to wrap together many issues, to the detriment of giving any one of them precise attention. This can lead to people talking past each other.

This talk will present the joint perspectives of a Māori scientist and a Pākehā philosopher of science, both seeking a better way forward. The talk will suggest strategies for avoiding ambiguities, provide greater conceptual clarity and offer foundations for more constructive discussion.
