Run for the hills – the robots are coming! Or should we?

Robots will take our jobs and destroy humanity! Or so cry the doomsayers. And with increasingly powerful systems like AI and ChatGPT, it appears they are right.

From self-driving cars and robotic waiters to novels written by chatbots, AI is invading our lives and changing how we live and work. But will robots really kick us out of our jobs and destroy us all?

This talk will explore some of the key issues and debates around our increasing dependence on automation and technology. Craig will discuss some of the cutting-edge technology being developed in the lab before delving into the counterarguments for a robotic takeover.

Should we run? Or should we enjoy a golden utopia of robot-delivered cocktails?

Bio

Dr Craig Sutherland is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electrical, Computer and Software Engineering, where he is interested in the ‘human’ side of technology. His research interests fall into three categories: how do children use robots, what do Māori think of robotics and how will robots influence our society in the future? Throughout his career, Craig has worked as a programmer, an early childhood educator and an ambulance officer, before ending up in academia. He uses all of these skills to prepare the next generation of roboticists and engineers to act in our best interests.
