Demystifying School-Based Health Education

Health education in the New Zealand Curriculum has long been seen as both intriguing and elusive — its goals and outcomes often unclear. Criticisms range from claims it's outdated and disconnected from students’ needs to accusations of being overly ideological or “woke.”

This talk will demystify the aims and outcomes of school-based health education, exploring the shift from scare tactics to a critical approach, the challenges of bringing curriculum ideals to life, and the myths that continue to surround the subject. The talk will incorporate the voice of recent school leavers to provide a contemporary take on what young people gain from studying the subject in schools.
