Extreme waves and open water swimming

Society relies on the Ocean as a source of food, energy, and water. It also critical to transport, trade, and recreation. Dr. Draper will outline the exciting engineering challenges that are central to working safely and efficiently in the ocean. These challenges encompass crafting economic structures that can survive extreme seas and persistence currents, and devising ways to optimise the navigation of ships and open water swimmers. For many of these challenges, WA is leading the world in the development of innovative solutions.

Bio

Scott Draper is an ocean engineer who works within a team of researchers at The University of Western Australia exploring how waves and currents interact with ocean structures, both to improve their design and reliability. He works with industry on applications across the blue economy, including the safe design of conventional and renewable energy infrastructure, subsea power cables, artificial reefs, and coastal infrastructure.
