Branching out: how we might defeat shot hole borer
We have all been shocked by the loss of so many beautiful trees in our city, Kings Park, Hyde Park and elsewhere, reducing the shade and habitat from the smallest urban canopy in Australia. The cause? The tiny polyphagous shot hole borer and its partner in crime, fusarium fungus. Although the situation seems dire, hear how it is possible to defeat this insidious invader, with different thinking and new approaches.
Bio
Associate Professor Theo Evans works across entomology, ecology and evolutionary biology, looking for long-term, sustainable and economical solutions to problems in urban, agricultural and natural systems. His research considers pests and beneficial insects, especially introduced species in wood and soil, such as termites and dung beetles, in a mix of field, lab and theoretical studies. He has worked with governments and industry in Australia, Asia, Oceania and the US.
