Cultural Landscapes: Better Ways to Conserve WA’s Extraordinary Heritage
Western Australia is known as the mining state – but it is also home to an extraordinary array of natural and cultural treasures– commonly known as Country to our First Nations peoples. Recognition of the Murujuga Cultural Landscape on the World Heritage List has bought this sharply into focus, as Australia’s second-only property on the list exclusively for cultural values.
Bio
Professor Jo McDonald is a rock art archaeologist and most of her research over the past 25 years has been in Western Australia: along the Canning Stock Route, across the Pilbara and on Murujuga (Dampier Archipelago). She specialises in multidisciplinary projects partnered collaboratively with host Aboriginal communities and focused on two-way knowledge. This mobilises funding from mining companies who have research and social responsibilities to these same host communities.
