There is massive jobs growth predicted in STEMM related industries - science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine, but like so many other sectors the representation of women declines significantly at more senior levels. Renae Ryan will explore the structural barriers to women succeeding in these industries, and why it is so important for industry – and society – that we embrace ‘Stemm–inism’ and make it a truly level playing field.
Equality in STEMM is an issue that’s close to Renae Ryan’s heart. As the Academic Director of the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) Program at the University of Sydney, Renae is in charge of a team who identify gaps and areas of improvement in equity policies and practices across the University. In her research at the Sydney Medical School, she leads a team that investigates the molecular details of amino acid pumps and their role in diseases such as epilepsy, cancer and chronic pain.
