Many of the world’s social and environmental problems have defied decades of traditional attempts to eliminate them. Fortunately, there is renewed hope and promise from a generation of young (and not so young) people willing to challenge the economic status quo.
The recent wave of social entrepreneurship offers a potentially useful approach to explore new ways of thinking. Organisations such as Thought Wired, Conscious Consumers and OOOOBY confront seemingly intractable social and environmental issues. Dr Deb Shepherd and Dr Jamie Newth will explain how we can move beyond the hype to real action and tangible impact through innovation and entrepreneurship.
Deb Shepherd is a Senior Lecturer in Management and International Business at the University of Auckland Business School. Her research and teaching focus on social entrepreneurship and innovation, education and the entrepreneurial mindset, and SMEs and family businesses.
Deb is involved in the student-led initiative Velocity and is the academic faculty director of the Velocity Vision to Business Programme.
Jamie Newth is currently a Research Fellow at the University of Auckland Business School, visiting scholar at Oxford University, and founder of Soul Capital - New Zealand’s first impact investment company.
His research focuses on social innovation and entrepreneurship and his teaching on experiential learning for start-up entrepreneurship, and general management and strategy.
