donald trump & the politics of national identity
Who gets what, when, and how? This year’s US Presidential election has seen an intense focus on who? Who is a member of the nation? This is the most basic question of politics, and is the one that matters most to Donald Trump and his supporters. In this talk, David explains why we won’t see a return to 'normal' American politics until the question of American national identity has been addressed, however painful that may be.
David Smith is jointly appointed to the United States Studies Centre and the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Sydney. He has a PhD in political science from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Sydney.
