The placebo effect: something from nothing
Placebo experts have found that your beliefs can help you to feel better – even when you’re given a fake pill. But how can something come from nothing? Ben will discuss how placebos can help patients with conditions ranging from pain to Parkinson’s disease and whether it’s ethical for medical professionals to use them.
Ben Colagiuri is a researcher in the School of Psychology, Faculty of Science, at the University of Sydney. His research aims to understand the psychological processes that drive the placebo effect. To date his research has uncovered how placebo effects can be created for a range of conditions, including pain, nausea, and sleep. He hopes that by better understanding placebo effects, we will be able to develop better methods of testing real medical treatments and improving patient outcomes.
